I never had the fortune of meeting him. I never sat in a classroom he taught. And yet, in every difficult decision made building Lali Properties from the ground up, his way of thinking has quietly guided us.
The Guru Who Taught Through Example
Ratan Tata didn’t lecture the world on how to do business. He simply did business in a way that made the world pay attention. He showed that a company could be ambitious and ethical at the same time — that you didn’t have to choose between growth and integrity.
When Lali Properties started in 2018, real estate in India carried (and still carries) a reputation problem — brokers seen as pushy, deals seen as opaque. We often thought back to the Tata way: build trust first, let the results follow. It’s a slower path. It’s also the only one that lasts.
Lessons Carried Into Our Own Work
Humility at the top. However large Tata Group grew, Ratan Tata was known for staying approachable and grounded. As a business building from a small local team into something bigger, that’s a daily reminder — success shouldn’t change how you treat people.
Long-term thinking over quick wins. Real estate rewards patience, and so did his approach to business — decisions made for decades, not just for the next quarter.
Compassion as strategy, not charity. His approach to philanthropy and to people wasn’t separate from his business — it was woven into it. That’s shaped how we think about clients at Lali Properties: not as transactions, but as relationships we’re building for the long run.
Dignity in every dealing. Whether it was a global acquisition or a small gesture, there was always a sense of doing things the right way, not just the easy way.
Why This Guru Purnima Feels Personal
Guru Purnima asks us to pause and acknowledge who helped us become who we are. Ratan Tata never advised us directly, never reviewed a deal we closed, never sat with us over chai in C Scheme discussing strategy. But his life’s work has been a silent mentor to an entire generation of Indian entrepreneurs, including us.
